The three costs, in order
Finding it: $300 to $1,000 for an independent inspection with lab sampling, or nothing if a remediation company inspects — with the caveat that the company inspecting is the company selling.
Removing it: $15 to $30 per square foot of affected area, which is $1,500 to $9,000 for most residential jobs. Containment, HEPA filtration and disposal are what distinguish this from cleaning.
Stopping it returning: the largest of the three and the one most often left out of the conversation. Mold is a symptom of moisture, and the moisture fix — drainage, encapsulation, a plumbing repair — is a separate trade at a separate price.

- What does dealing with mold cost in total?
- An inspection is $300 to $1,000, remediation $1,500 to $9,000, and the repair that stops the moisture returning is separate again — often $3,000 to $8,000 for drainage or encapsulation. A realistic all-in figure for a crawl space mold problem is $6,000 to $15,000.
- Does insurance pay for any of it?
- Only where the water was sudden and accidental — a burst pipe, storm damage to the roof. Mold from humidity, seepage or deferred maintenance is excluded from essentially every standard policy, and even covered claims usually cap mold at $5,000 to $10,000.
- Why does this site not cover health effects of mold?
